Jason Kenney: oh, how quickly those principles crumble

Jason Kenney, Member of Parliament for Calgary-Southeast, is currently serving as Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity. It's a job that comes with the benefit of an extra $67,600 in salary per year, not to mention a pretty snappy title for a guy who's not even forty yet.

What does a Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity do, you might ask? I honestly wasn't sure. After googling around for quite some time and getting progressively less enlightened, I finally stumbled upon the first link above. There, I was pleased to see the "portfolios" link with the subtitle learn about Secretary of State Kenney's responsibilities. Alas, when I clicked, all I found was the word "Multiculturalism," leaving me even more baffled than when I'd started.

Today, though, my fellow oxymoron over at Accidental Deliberations has finally put his finger on what it is Secretary of State Kenney does with his time--apparently, he is responsible for getting more ethnic minorities to vote for the Conservative Party. It might be interesting to get the opinion of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation on what they think of that rather partisan use of taxpayer funds--if it weren't for the fact that Kenney used to be their leader.

Ugh. Kenney was once my MP. I actually remember him coming to our door, and all he did was proclaim how Stockwell Day was standing up for family values.

Kenney doesn't have a multicultural bone in his body, so it's perfectly plausible that this is just a reward for service. That's what the ol' boys club does. It's called accountability, I suppose.

Oh, did I mention he was actually the President of the Taxpayers Federation at one point? How those principles crumble indeed.

Nope, but I did--in the last line of the post you just responded to. ;-)

All multiculturalism has ever been for was to buy votes. You sound surprised? Liberals are the best at it hence they carried most of Canada's least white ridings. Ie toronto, vancouver and montreal.

Affirmative action is evil and it says something about the people we bring into the country that they will only vote for parties that practice racism like preferential hiring, quotas at universities, VS whites. And lets not forget the shootings in Toronto. Plus there are not a lot of white male cultural centres in Canada but luckily white males are not important. Well the rich ones may be but last I checked I wasn't rich.

The whole department should be shut down its a total waste of money. If people want to celebrate their culture don't take my $ to do it. I want my taxes to go to hospitals and for more doctors, nurses etc. Not for tax funded pagents to stereotype people forever.

I don't even know where to start with that last one.

"Affirmative action is evil and it says something about the people we bring into the country that they will only vote for parties that practice racism like preferential hiring, quotas at universities, VS whites. And lets not forget the shootings in Toronto."

Even with affirmative action hiring measures, positions of power are still overwelmingly white and male and no proportionate to the percentage of ethnic minorities. Either this is a) a problem caused factors other than race, or related to racial stigmatism or b) races other than whites are less represented because they are inately inferior to white people.

Take your pick. You seem to be in favour of the second. Because the "coloureds" are doing the shootings in your mind.

"Plus there are not a lot of white male cultural centres in Canada but luckily white males are not important. Well the rich ones may be but last I checked I wasn't rich."

No cultural centres? Since we live in a white male society, why would you need a centre when you can just go see a Steven Segal movie or go to a hockey game? Seems to be white male-centric to me.

Of course rich white males are the most important. There you have it. A racialized economic hierarchy.

Another angry white-male. Grow up.

Oh, it could be worse. Multiculturalism used to be a portfolio for a full cabinet minister.

But if you wanted to push for its abolition, IP, I'd be right there with you in the fight. ;-)

*snerk* Yeah, yeah, dream on. :-)

So, is this the guy behind the powerpoint slides the Globe & Mail showed yesterday? The ones where the Conservatives showed exactly which ethnic groups they would target and which ones they wouldn't, broken down by riding. It showed that they would not target "blacks" in Thornhill, but most other ethnic groups in Thornhill they would (the ones they labelled "CPC accessible".} Pretty disgusting stuff.

That's our boy! What pride we can take in these government ministers, eh?

How ironic that your CCF party was started by people you now believe hold a disproportionate amount of power: white males. The people who enjoy the rights and freedoms brought about by the suffering of CCF workers like my grandfather now demonize their white grandchildren.

Sorry, not following. Not sure how anyones white grandchildren are being demonized. Expand that argument.

Additionally, I'm not sure that fits the definition of irony. Of course the movement was pushed forward by a majority of white males, but there were many women involved in the CCF, too. Plus, it was the Prairies in the 30's. How many non-white people do you think were in Saskatchewan at the time?

I don't think there's anything wrong with white people or males. I am both, in fact. It just so happens that white males hold a much higher proportion of power than their percentage of the population. Doesn't that make sense.
